Crucial Conversations –Coaching Leadership

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

This project is an opportunity to explore the strategies and techniques required in coaching through a crucial conversation. Working with your assigned new partner together demonstrate 2 versions of a Crucial Conversation with all four elements of “stating my path”. In one version, have the conversation be ineffective, in the second have it be effective.  We will be using Blackboard Collaborate for this session.  There is no required power point for this session.  This project is based on the readings contained in the Crucial Conversations textbook.

STATE MY PATH(The stands for )

Share your facts

Tell your story

Ask for other’s paths

Talk tentatively

Encourage testing

Situation: Kyle and Moon are both nurse managers. Kyle has been in this position for almost two years, while Moon is brand new. Moon is constantly on Kyle’s unit, speaking to staff and finding out the details of the patients. Kyle feels that Moon is micromanaging her and trying to control her staff. Kyle feels that Moon talks down to her, not only by her words but also her body language. Moon has nicknamed herself the “Chief of Staff”.

Ineffective Conversation:

(Moon walks into Kyle’s office, no knock)

Moon: Hey. Did you know that you have a patient on your floor whose has mother went outside last night, fell, and ended up in the ER to get stitches?

Kyle: Yes, Moon. I did know that. Why is it any of your concern?

Moon: I’m just telling you what’s going on. You don’t have to get defensive with me.

Kyle: I’m only getting defensive, because I am frustrated beyond belief. You not only micromanage me, but you are trying to manage my unit. You are not even my boss. We are on the same level! I have even been a manager longer than you.

Moon: Is that really how you feel?

Kyle: Yes, that is exactly how I feel. I am sorry that I have been holding it in so long, but I just can’t take it anymore.

(Silent pause)

Kyle: Furthermore, my staff is always questioning me as to why you are up here all the time and asking them questions.

Moon: Oh…

(Silent pause)

Kyle: Don’t you have things that you need to take care of on your own unit? I am perfectly capable of running this unit by myself.

Moon: Fine.

(Moon exits the office)

*** My ideas for the effective conversation would be for Kyle to find out that moon has a military background where they MBWA (manage by walking around). Also, that as a new manager, Moon has no idea what to do in her office and no one has shown her. She is only on the units because that is what she knows, how to be a good charge nurse. Moon needs a mentor and wants it to be Kyle.
