Cultural Background

Description:
CULTURAL FAMILY BACKGROUND PAPER INSTRUCTIONS
If possible I would like to have an African American to complete this paper. It would really be helpful if that person writing the paper would have an idea of growing up in the south. This paper supposes to be about my cultural family background. I am a black 30 year old male that grow up in North Carolina and I play a lot of sports until I got hurt in college plating baseball. Both my parents are black so I have no multi-racial background. My mother owns her own bakery and my father have a remodeling company. He does a lot of work such as adding on to people houses. My instructor asked that I have 7 scholarly and 5 internet/media references.
You will complete a 10–12-page cultural background paper describing the background of your parents or primary caregivers in regards to family culture and how this background impacts you both personally and as a counselor. If you have a multi-racial background, pick the 2 most predominant cultural backgrounds. The key question you will answer in this paper is how your cultural background influenced the family system patterns found in your family of origin. You will look at some of the research describing people from your background, consider family system patterns found in those cultures (comparing and contrasting them with your own family of origin), explore internet resources related to your culture, and interview your parents/significant care givers or other significant family members to get information. Your paper will also include a genogram focused on cultural aspects of your family’s experience. Below you will find further information.

Scholarly Research Sources for your Paper:
You will use at least 7 scholarly reference sources relating to your family’s cultural background. Scholarly sources are academic journals or books/texts from the multicultural disciplinary area.
I need these two books to be apart of the references.
Hays, D. G., & Erford, B. T. (2010). Developing multicultural counseling competence: A systems approach. New York: Pearson. ISBN: 9780132432412.
McGoldrick, M., Giordano, J., & Garcia-Preto, N. (2005). Ethnicity and family therapy (3rd ed.). New York: Guliford Press. ISBN: 1593850204.
Hints: Your McGoldrick text may have a specific chapter on your particular group(s) that would be helpful. Here are some examples: Students with a White background often are initially stumped with this assignment because they haven’t considered their cultural background before. If you are White and have a Scots-Irish background, there’s a specific McGoldrick chapter on that group. White and Colonial English? There’s one on that, too. German? The same. The key is for you to discover more specifically the culture(s) of your original White roots. If you have a Latino background from Cuba, there’s a specific chapter on that. Puerto Rico? The same. If you have an Asian background from Korea, there’s a specific chapter on that. Japan? The same. You get the idea. The McGoldrick text has chapters on specific subcultures rather than just the generic White, Asian, and Latino categories. Be as specific as possible in your cultural sources. If you have a U.S. Black background, it is acceptable to use general chapters on this group.

Internet/media sources for your paper:
In your paper, you must also include at least 5 significant internet/media resources related to your culture. Discuss the key findings you made from using these resources. For example, on the internet you may find the following culturally useful and prominent types of resources:
• online local newspapers from the country
• internet radio stations and broadcasts
• music of the country/group
• movies or videos
• art
• culturally-specific online magazines or blogs
• important organizations or associations
In your paper, address how the internet/media sources enrich what you know of your cultural background and add to the information you gained by reading scholarly articles.
First person may be used in this paper. It should be 10–12 pages in APA format. Use either Times New Roman or Arial font, size 12. Do not use Courier. Organize the paper based on the key information you discover. Be sure to include a title page, abstract, genogram (or sufficient information from the genogram), and references as components of your paper. The title page, abstract, and references do not count towards the 10–12 pages. The genogram does.

In your concluding section, tie together the major things you’ve learned about your cultural background and how this background impacts you today.
