STUDENT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1. Demonstrate the ability to write a brief, focused, well-constructed compare/contrast essay.
2. Understand how to use comparison and contrast techniques (clear purpose, shared features, manageable comparison,
organization, balance and flexibility, etc.) effectively.
3. Use good English grammar to create well-structured sentences and paragraphs.

Select one of the following topics and write a 700 word comparison and contrast essay:
1) The main characters of two movies, novels or stories
2) Two sports or sports teams
3) How city dwellers and country dwellers spend their leisure time
4) How women and men do something (cook, shop, watch TV, etc.)
5) Two people you know well
6) Two neighborhoods
7) Television when you were a child and television today

What to turn in:
I should receive one rough draft and one double-spaced final essay in the same Word document. Your name, course
title/number, and the date should be in the upper left-hand corner of the document. Your final essay should come first
followed by your rough draft.
The rough draft:
This draft can be as rough as you like. It is your chance to gather your thoughts, pinpoint key ideas, begin to link different
parts of your essay together and formulate an overall plan for presenting your story. Read pgs.
51-59 of The Bedford Reader and pgs. 392-418 of the Harbrace Handbook to better understand this process.
The final essay should include:
1) A clear purpose or central idea. (Need review? See pgs. 246-247 of The Bedford Reader)
2) Shared features between the two things being compared and/or contrasted. (Need
review? See pg. 247 of The Bedford Reader)
3) A manageable scope that doesn’t cover too much ground. (Need review? See pgs. 247-248 of The
Bedford Reader)
4) Good balance, organization and flexibility. (Need review? See pgs. 250-251 of The Bedford Reader)
5) Effective transitions that move the story along
