A young woman was attacked whilst walking home late one evening. Her attacker brandished a knife and she sustained minor injuries before the assailant was disturbed by a passer-by and fled the scene. DNA has been isolated from blood stained clothing and analysed to create a DNA profile (Figure 1).

An offence occurred at “The Canley Tavern” public house in Coventry during which a glass was broken by the offender and used to inflict serious wounds upon a 21 year old, female victim. The offender cut himself on the glass and left some blood on the door handle of the pub as he exited the premises.
Based upon a description of the offender (tall, brown hair and wearing a dark coloured “Scruffs” hooded top) a suspect, Terry Martindale, was arrested approximately 1 hour after the incident. On arrest, Mr Martindale stated that he did not drink at “The Canley Tavern” public house and had not been into that pub for many months.
The blood from the door handle of the pub was swabbed and tested by blood typing. A buccal (cheek) swab from the suspect, Mr Martindale, was also tested by blood typing. Both the blood swab and the buccal swab from Mr Martindale were found to be of blood type B Rh-, a blood type found in only 2% of the population of Coventry.
