Any initial data collection process often leaves the researcher with raw data. Next, the researcher must start an initial assessment of this raw data. Descriptive statistics allow the researcher to start making sense of this data. Specifically, the researcher can explain the data in terms of measures of central tendency and measures of variability. Central tendency refers to the tendency of the raw data to aggregate around a central value. The most usual measures of central tendency are the mean, median, and mode. Conversely, variability, also known as dispersion, refers to the tendency of the raw data to disperse from a central value. The two common measures of variability are the range and the standard deviation.
In this weeks Discussion, you will examine descriptive statistics, including measures of central tendency and variability, and relate these concepts to the concept of scales of measurement (nominal, ordinal, interval, ratio).
Consider the differences between central tendency and variability, and determine the most appropriate measure to use when describing data distributions.
