Assessment item 5: Interpretation of MS/MS spectrum to determine peptide sequence. Intent: In modern proteomics (and metabolomics and small molecule analysis for that matter) the majority of data is generated by a mass spectrometer, by the selection of an ion, the fragmentation of the ion, and the measurement of those fragments which are diagnostic of the amino acid sequence. Thus, you need to understand how to interpret this data, which is what this assessment seeks to do. Objectives: For you to demonstrate the ability to understand and interpret the data contained in an MS/MS spectrum of a fragmented peptide. This assessment task contributes to the development of the following graduate attributes: 1. Disciplinary knowledge and its appropriate application 3. Professional skills and their appropriate application Task: You will be provided with the fragmentation (MS/MS) spectrum of a peptide. The task is to determine the sequence of the peptide, annotate the spectrum to show the relevant fragment ions that prove the amino acid sequence
