What other differences are there in the roles and responsibilities of past policing eras from today? There is a difference between the various roles of the urban police officer in America. Law enforcement officers during the 18th and 19th century wore many hats when it came to their job responsibilities. They were responsible for a variety of social service type responsibilities, that law enforcement is not tasked with today. In addition, officers were not initially issued firearms. Would these methods of policing be effective today?
