Study of Inmate Experience In this assignment, you will create and design an empirical research study concerning the patterns of social interaction of a particular sample of inmates in a penal institution. The study should result in a valid, reliable, ethical, and effectively written research project. The study should be designed to meet standards of scientific merit review (SMR) and Institutional Review Board (IRB) submission. The assignment consists of a title, followed by five sections; each section following the introduction is preceded by a heading: • An introduction (approximately 100 words). • A literature review (approximately 200 words). • A method of research (approximately 300 words). • Anticipated findings (approximately 100 words) • A discussion (approximately 300 words). Assignment Instructions Follow these instructions in completing the assignment: 6. Make sure you have chosen a topic for your study, as instructed in Unit 5. The specific topic is up to you to decide. 7. Select and read, as instructed in Unit 5, one qualitative research article from a peer-reviewed journal that is relevant to your topic. Use the Capella library to find the article. 8. Make sure you have provided a title for your research study, as instructed in Unit 5. Include the following under each section: • Under Introduction:

 Include a brief overview of the major area of your topic that will be addressed by the proposed research project you are designing. Furthermore, specify the potential contribution this project could make to the literature by indicating the gap in knowledge that it will fill. • Under Literature Review:

 Provide a brief summary of the article you have selected, focusing carefully on how the article will support your research project. • Under Method of Research:

 Design your own study.

 Apply, for example, social control or bonding theory or symbolic interactionism or labeling theory.  State the central research question in one sentence. What do you want to discover?  Provide two theses statements, such as:

 Mixed race inmates tend to arrange their group hierarchies in relation to skin color.  Women tend to affiliate in relation to extended family models.  Show how the theory helps you derive your research question and your theses.  Describe the method of research you will use to carry out your study in ethical ways, with minimal risk to the researcher and the inmates.

 Present the types of questions you would ask.  Describe the groups you would access.

 Discuss how you would access these groups, and present the concepts you would use.  Show how you would protect the security of the groups and your qualitative data.  Discuss how you would collect the data. • Under Anticipated Findings:  Suggest what you imagine you would find if you actually implemented the design.  Explain how you would analyze the data using qualitative conceptual tools.  Explain how you would present (write up) the qualitative data? • Under Discussion:  Describe how you would use theory to explain the findings you would expect to obtain.  Identify at least one limitation of your own proposed project.  Present any policy implications that could be taken from your proposed, theoretically informed, qualitative research project. Be sure your assignment includes references to one peer-reviewed research article as well as the textbook, and that the citations and references comply with APA sixth edition guidelines. The total length of your assignment should be approximately 1,000 words, excluding title page and reference page.
