M.Sc. Decision Support for Sustainability (MAN4319M) – Postgraduate 2014
The single assignment includes the application of selected parts of the course contents, particularly the decision support tools, which must be adapted to a managerial decision problem in general or a company/industry as a special case. The module assessment will be based on one individual assignment which carries total mark of 100%.
Please read carefully the guideline which is intended to help you provide inclusive coursework along with maintaining consistency amongst the entire MSc students from different disciplines.
Assignment
The coursework could be involved with any wide ranging topic of operations management. Therefore, the investigation, data collection, modelling and analysis can be undertaken in any areas of operations management in any context of manufacturing/service industry or healthcare organisations. Design a decision support tool with the following steps:
i) Investigate a real world problem dealing with sustainability such as Green Supply Chain Management in which unused products and packaging and waste can be returned from customers to manufacturers for remanufacturing. You will need to cite at least 10 references (articles/books/Web links) in the assignment.
ii) Employ a computer-based decision support system from the decision tools introduced in the module such as a multi criteria decision model, which can be used for evaluation and/or selection of a product/service/supplier while considering quantitative and qualitative criteria.. Different alternative decision can be evaluated for supplier selection, remanufacturing or refurbishment of the products, and the returned products e.g. resell, remanufacture, or refurbish for each product.
iii) Evaluate the alternative product/service/supplier using an appropriate method. For example, AHP/ANP can be used to evaluate the multiple criteria and selection of an alternative solution through pairwise comparisons.
iv) Find out how sensitive an alternative solution is with respect to other criteria. For example, how a key criterion such as ‘price’ could influence the solution in comparison to the other criteria.
v) The nature of investigation, the number of criteria or data types and the volume of data sets should be appropriate for computer-based analysis. In special circumstances in which the minimum data requirement cannot be met due to limitation of data availability or the company size being too small, the circumstance must be clearly addressed and justified by writing proper statements in the assignment.

Marking guideline for the assignment:
1) You must undertake the coursework individually.
2) You can choose any topic of your interest that deals with decision making for sustainability.
3) The total mark for the written assignment will be 100%.
4) The written coursework must include the following sections:
a) Project title: the topic should be relevant to the module content and commenced and completed on time.
b) Abstract: short definition of the project (up to half a page).
c) Introduction: to the project or the industry or the company under study with incorporating the need for decision support systems through a literature review.
d) Methodology: problem description in details, appropriate decision support tools and modelling with possible assumptions set in the project.
e) Discussion and analysis of results: preferably using computer software.
f) Conclusion and/or recommendations.
5) You must cite all the references e.g. books, articles and website sources using Harvard Referencing System. You are expected to cite at least 10 references within the text with proper referencing for each assignment. You must show clearly where you have used someone else’s work in your assignments e.g. when you quote or paraphrase someone else’s work. The Harvard Referencing System is designed to help you do this and a quick guide with examples can be found in the following table (Harvard System of Referencing: Basic Concepts, 2013).

Assessment Criteria:
The standard Bradford University School of Management marking criteria will be used in grading your work. The criteria to mark your assignment will be mainly based on how you will answer the following questions in different sections mentioned above (a-f):
? Are the topic and the abstract reflecting the whole assignment contents?
? Is the problem investigation properly undertaken through an adequate literature review?
? Is there a possible problem, which needs the application of a decision support tool? If so, are the possible suitable decision tools searched and compared?
? Is a decision support tool selected as to be appropriate for the problem and is the tool adapted to the case properly?
? Are the possible assumptions found and set for using the decision support tool?
? Is the proposed (computer based) model well designed for modelling the problem? Is the collected data set properly inputted to the proposed (computer based) model?
? How is the solution outcome discussed, analysed and interpreted?
? How are the conclusion and recommendations made?
Quality of presentation in terms of writing, tables, figures and references will be considered for marking of each section (a-f) mentioned above.

1) Give relevant real life practical examples that you know about or have read about in the case studies, newspapers, books and/or the Internet.
2) Use only relevant references and provide a list of these at the end of the assignment, in Harvard referencing style.
3) The wordage is 2,000 words for the assignment. A penalty will apply if you go over the word limit so please consult the latest edition of the Student Handbook. The references, appendices, figures and tables are not counted towards the word limit.
4) Use the following layout guidelines for the whole assignment:
Font: Times New Roman
Text size: 11
Margins left and right: 3 cm
Margins top and bottom: 3 cm
Number the pages
Left and right margins fully justified
Use Harvard referencing style
You should also include a coversheet at the front of your assignment (as per instructions provided on the next page from the postgraduate office)
5) Keep an electronic copy of your assignment should your tutor request it in order to forward to examiners.
6) Please type and backup your work on several drives, regularly, as the extension is unlikely to be granted to anyone claiming to have lost their work through disk failure etc.
7) Finally make an early start on your assignment and make a shared use of books. Hence return the books back to the library as soon as possible.
