2)Philosophers have often wondered whether the soul can exist without the body and, if this is the case, whether the soul, even without the body, can possess cognitive

capacities, such as sensation and knowledge. Analyze Homer’s, Plato’s and Epicurus’ views on this issue. Which one, if any, is ultimately more convincing?

Essential essay components:

1) Thesis. For example, “In this paper, I shall argue that…” or “My thesis is that…”
2) Homer’s view of body and soul.
3) Epicurus’ conception of the soul and of its relation to the body.
4) Plato’s ontology
5) Plato’s argument from recollection
6) Plato’s account of recollection in the Phaedrus.

When citing Homer’s Book XI of the Odyssey, indicate the page of the handout, for example (Odyssey, Book XI, p. 4). When citing Plato, use Stephanus numbers, for

example (Phaedo 63b), (Phaedrus 246c). When citing Epicurus, indicate the title of the letter’s addressee and the page number, for example (Herodotus, p. 2).
