Approach the research paper with costs and benefits concerning the
WHY: Explain why the EU integration happened and why there is a divide (and explain mostly why but also how did the divide happen).

Present evidents to support the argument which of the three structural, economic or cultural aspect has more importance on the matter.
Give solid intro to the topic (what do you want to prove with this research how does it contribute to already knowledge) and conclusion (include recommendations and possible future research on the topic).

THE RESEARCH PAPER
The proposal will be 1-2 pages long. For this assignment I expect you to do the following: What is your topic and why is it important? What is your research question and what is your argument? What is your arguments place in the literature and how does it refute/complement/add to it. What are the major sources associated with this literature? Provide a small list of sources you plan to use.
A first draft of your final paper (Hardcopy in class, and online under blackboard assignments). Your First Draft should be much more than a simple draft and is expected to be as complete and polished as you can make it. Your work will be evaluated and returned to you with comments and suggestions. It should be 7-10 pages long typewritten (12p times new roman), double- spaced, with 1 inch margins. All elements of the final paper (as outlined below) should be present in the first draft! It should have no less than 5 references (1 maximum web based).

Final research paper. You must submit your papers electronically through Blackboards Turnitin.com

Your paper should be approximately 20 pages long, typewritten (12p times new roman), double-spaced, with 1 inch margins (ALL AROUND).
Your bibliography should contain at least 7 references (2 maximum web-based)[I gave you 20 on the order details but you can do as many as see fit for a 20 page research paper], half of which should be from scholarly journals and books. Abstracts of articles are provided in political, economic, and social science indices such as the Social Sciences Citation Index, Public Affairs Information Service, and the International Political Science Abstracts. If you are unsure of how to construct a bibliography and/or utilize internal notes, you should consult the “Style Manual for Political Science.”

The paper should examine one particular issue in International Affairs (this can be a particular organizational issue, or political problem that affects states and people). It should apply the various course themes and readings to the definition, explanation, and/or solution of the issue.

The paper may be written to a decision maker (perhaps the Head of State, the executive of an IGO or NGO, a corporations CEO, etc), and may take the form of a problem-solution analysis.

For your paper you should:
1. Come up with a question you want to answer. Try to word this question as clearly and succinctly as possible, i.e. within only a few sentences. The goal is to define your question fairly narrowly and precisely.
2. Present a literature review: What have other scholars said about this question? How have they answered it? You might show that there have been two divergent sets of responses to your question. Or you might argue that scholars have generally provided one particular answer to the question but that their findings are an artifact of a particular type of research design; if the question were asked differently, a different answer might emerge. Either you want to settle a debate where findings have been mixed or inconsistent by looking at new evidence, or you want to shed light on the question by asking it in a different (and better) way than previous scholars have done. Or you can say that very little work has been done at all on your question, which is nevertheless an important question (here you should provide a justification for why it is important in this case).
3. Present the evidence and arguments to support the thesis. Be sure to make sound arguments that are supported by credible literature or by refuting counter-arguments. Whatever you do, you must refute counter-arguments to present a credible argument.
4. Provide a conclusion along with a discussion of any future problems/implications you anticipate with your solution to the problem or your new way of looking at the problem.

Pick one style of citation (e.g. APA, MLA, Chicago) and follow it throughout your paper. Follow the style when it comes to references inside the text or in footnotes, as well as for the bibliography. Long quotations are unacceptable and you should pay attention to the structure of your paper: it should be well written; ie with proper spelling and grammar, well-structured sentences and paragraphs, good transition between paragraphs. Any form of plagiarism, copying, using unauthorized notes or unauthorized collaboration, will immediately receive a F for that work and will be reported to college and campus authorities.

Plagiarism
You are plagiarizing if you do the following:
1) Incomplete paraphrasing. If you use substantive words, phrases, or rhetorical structures from your source without documentation, you are plagiarizing. Whether you “kidnap” one or two words or a whole page, you are plagiarizing.
2) Missing citation. If you use any ideas that are clearly NOT common knowledge without citing your source, you are plagiarizing. It does not matter whether you’ve expressed the ideas in your own language.
3) Copying. If you simply copy from any source without quotation marks or attribution, you are plagiarizing.
Among the practices which constitute plagiarism are: using in their entirety or even in part recycled papers or papers from another course or teacher or papers written by someone else, either by a student or a person publishing a paper in an academic journal or book.

Formatting and other expectations appear below, and papers failing to meet them will lose points.
