Double Indemnity
Paper instructions:
(1) explain how
Double Indemnity is a good example of
film noir; and
(2) explain how the film FITS Mulvey’s argument (see notes below)
The MAN
• is a developed,
3-dimensional character.
• is active.
• is the one who LOOKS, the spectator (and the camera tends to look WITH him).
• moves the narrative forward.
• Therefore, because of all of the above, he is the character we most identify with (and by that I do NOT mean that you think you and the character are alike).
The WOMAN
• is a
one-dimensional character.
• is passive.
• is the one LOOKED AT (the object of the man and the camera’s gaze).
• Since she’s an erotic spectacle, she freezes the flow of the narrative (the narrative stops while we look at her).
