Why did early criminologists refuse to recognize white collar crimes as actual crimes?

Why did early criminologists refuse to recognize white collar crimes as actual crimes? Who was Edwin Sutherland and how is he connected to white collar crime? What makes these types of crimes different than street crimes. With their huge financial loss to many employees and investors (some lose their life savings), should white collar crimes (as well as corporate crimes) be taken more seriously?
