Your company has successfully bid on a job to fabricate the structural steel columns for the New York City Convention Center. The material for the columns has been selected as 6.00 diameter A 618 grade 2 schedule 80 pipe. Per code, the welding process is SMAW.

The company has transformer/rectifier welding machines rated at 300 amps at 60% duty cycle and a maximum amperage output of 450. Pipe to pipe and flange to pipe welds are required to complete the columns.

Your boss has assigned you the responsibility of selecting the correct electrode, determining the tensile strength, yield strength, elongation, polarity, amperage range and starting amperage. He also wants you to provide a description of the purpose of the coating on the electrode.
