Electronics 1 (Devices and Materials), Single-Transistor Amplifier

Electronics 1 (Devices and Materials), Single-Transistor Amplifier

Design a single-transistor amplifier to supply a load of 1k? from a signal source with a resistance of 10k?,
using a power supply of 5V. The minimum performance requirement is that your amplifier have a power gain of
at least 10 (10dB). This means that the amplifier must deliver at least ten times as much power to the load as it
draws from the source. You are allowed to use a BJT or a MOSFET, as well as any amplifier configuration of
your choosing. You should use one of the “good” biasing arrangements given in the chapter.
A SPICE template file has already been created for you and is available for download from Blackboard. It
contains the power supply, input section, output section, the model statements for the two transistor options, and
the analysis commands. Follow the instructions given in the file and add the rest of your circuit to make it
complete. Use the instructions and analysis commands given to evaluate your amplifier. See the last page of this
document for a schematic representation of the template given.
If you meet the performance requirement of a 10dB power gain, full credit will be given for the performance. In
addition, a competition will be held for bonus points. Bonus points will be awarded to the top performers in the
following categories:
? Overall voltage gain (5 points)
? Highest input resistance (5 points)
? Lowest output resistance (5 points)
? Lowest DC power consumption (5 points)
Achieving the number one performance in one of these categories will add the given number of points to your
final grade for the course. The top fifteen performers in each category will receive bonus points, scaled by rank.
Ties will have the points divided up between them. You can receive points from more than one category.
Any submission will be disqualified that changes the source resistance, load resistance, supply voltage,
transistor model statements, or uses more than one transistor.
Electronics I (Devices and Materials)
Report

The report format and grade breakdown is as follows:
? Cover Page: 5 Points
? Schematic (printed or hand-drawn) of the final circuit, with:
? All elements labeled exactly as in the Spice netlist: 5 Points
? All component values given exactly as in the Spice netlist: 5 Points
? All nodes labeled exactly as in the Spice netlist: 5 Points
? A hand analysis of your final circuit, with calculations for the expected values of the following:
? Overall voltage gain: 5 Points
? Overall current gain: 5 Points
? Overall power gain: 5 Points
? Input resistance: 5 Points
? Output resistance: 5 Points
? DC power consumption: 5 Points
? Printout of your final SPICE netlist: 10 Points
? A table with the following results from the SPICE analysis. These should match the results I get when I
run your file. If they are significantly different, points will be subtracted: 10 Points
? Overall power gain in dB
? Overall voltage gain in dB
? Input resistance (in dB or ?)
? Output resistance (in dB or ?)
? Performance Analysis: 15 Points
? If the power gain is above 10dB, full credit will be given. If it is below 10dB, no credit will be given.
? Conclusion.  give an answer to the following questions:
? What basic amplifier configuration did you choose, and why? 5 Points
? What biasing circuit did you choose, and why? 5 Points
? How did you determine your resistor values? 5 Points
? Bonus points will be awarded as described above
