Some notes on the final story
By drawing on your experience with the class interview, the self-portrait and the subculture story, you might think about how the following principles will apply to your story investigating a civic issue or a cultural phenomenon grounded in a place, Detroit, for example.
Keep in mind that your story will use as key evidence a series of interviews. The interviews will take place somewhere that is related to the story. The interviews will not take place over the telephone or on the Internet, although follow up interviews can be conducted over the phone or via e-mail.
Think in terms of a series of scenes. Each of the books we have read this semester can be deconstructed as a series of scenes.
Detroit is an ideal place for this story, and here are some possibilities.
Filmmaker Florent Tillon has made several documentaries about Detroit. You can Google and interview with him, and also access one of his films, “Detroit Wildlife” on the Internet. He interviews key figures involved in “reinventing” Detroit in this little film. You can then contact those key figures.
The NYT article, “It Take a Village to Open a Bistro” will lead you to Le Petite Zinc, a restaurant in cCorktown near the intersection of Trumbull and Fort Streets and some other business ventures
UCCA/University Cultural Association is a resource for the midtown area of downtown Detroit. The Urban Garden Movement: Earthworks Urban Farm, Hantz Farms, Detroit, FB Page for The Neighborhood Back Yard at the Grosse Pointe Park, Detroit border.
Southwest Detroit, including Mexican Town is another possibility. Be sure to visit The Honeybee Market behind the central train station.
The Detroit Artist Market would be a great place to get some initial interviews about the art/gallery scene in Detroit.
Artspacedearborn.org is an organization that has hired an outside company to work with the city of Dearborn to create some subsidized studios space and living quarters for artists
