In American politics, the late 1920’s began the terrible decline in the economy known as the Great Depression. The stock market crashed, many persons lost all of their fortunes. At the same time, there was a drought in the Midwestern part of the country. This “dust bowl” lead many to migrate to California where they thought they might be able to make a living. The next film, Grapes of Wrath, deals with this migration. It also deals with the rise of the first powerful labor unions that were meant to protect workers against being exploited.
In your paper, focus on what the author is saying about the politics of the great depression. More specifically, how are labor unions portrayed? In terms of the video by Franklin D. Roosevelt, consider how he addressed the great depression and what he wanted to do about those who were suffering from lack of work and poverty.
