Essay on an issue in LST:
Choose ONE of the following topics:
(Whichever topic you choose, DO NOT use texts from Assignments 1 or 2 as examples to illustrate your argument.)
a. The use of visuals in EITHER pedagogic science OR popular science OR professional science
b. A comparison the use of visuals in professional, popular and pedagogic science
c. A comparison the use of the use of metaphor in professional, popular and pedagogic science
d. The use of the use of metaphor in professional OR popular OR pedagogic science
e. Authorial identity in professional and pedagogic scientific texts
f. Can popular science texts be used to teach the language of science to science students at university? Why or why not?
g. Issues in teaching the language of science to L1 speakers OR to L2 speakers.
h. Select two texts, one a newspaper article on popular science, the second an article from a ‘serious’ popular science magazine. (If you are not sure about this distinction, read Hyland’s article on popular science on e-reserve.) Compare the way each presents information and uses language, figurative language and visuals. j. Select a Youtube clip dealing with popular, professional or pedagogic science and analyse the way it presents information and uses language (including metaphor), visuals and multimedia. (If you select this option, please check your selected clip with Jean before you begin.)
k. Select a story from a radio program such as the ABC’s Science Show and analyse the way it presents information and uses language. (If you select this option, please check your selected clip with Jean before you begin.)
You may select a topic that is not on this list, but please check it with the unit coordinator before commencing work on it.

Grading criteria:
You need to select the most appropriate genre for your assignment. This could be EITHER an essay OR a report.
If you are arguing for a position, you should write an essay.
If you are conducting an analysis, you should write a report.
You will be graded with reference to the following criteria:
 select the appropriate genre for the assignment: essay or analytical report
 introduce the text, resource or topic you have chosen and explain why it is of interest
 identify the features or issues to be examined
 critically analyse the selected features
 support you argument with references to the relevant literature (a minimum of 8 sources, including at least 2 from the set readings)
NB: These references must be references to the research literature.
 use APA reference style for in-text referencing

 write clearly and accurately, using appropriate structure and academic language

Assignment submission procedures
 This assignment needs to be submitted to Turnitin using the link in the Assessments file on iLearn
 Assignments must include the official assignment cover page of the Faculty of Human Sciences, available from: http://www.humansciences.mq.edu.au/current_students/undergraduate/assignment_cover_sheet
 Add a footer to each page of the assignment, with page numbering and the unit code in the footer
 Type double-spaced
 You should keep a duplicate copy of your assignment in case your original copy is mislaid.
