Ethnic Political Violence TAKE-HOME FINAL, Fall, 2014

This is not a term paper or research paper.  Please study as if for an in-class exam.  The purpose of the take-home format is to make it a more useful learning

experience.   Please answer ONE of the following questions. Six to (no more than) eight double-spaced, typed pages.  Please use dark ink and standard sized print (12)

as well as standard margins.
The exam is due by 4:00 PM on Tuesday, December 9th.
Please place a HARD COPY of your exam in my mailbox in Room 301 Meserve Hall.  If the office is locked please place your exam in the student drop box outside room 301.

Keep a second hard copy for your records. I will pick up the exams early the next morning.
One-half letter grade will be deducted for each day you are late.
You also must submit your paper to Turnitin.

PLEASE ANSWER ONE OF THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1.     Please explain to what degree theories of ethnic conflict can help us understand the conflict in Iraq and Syria (and relevant nearby and other involved

countries).  You must make reference to various key theories and then choose which one(s) is/are most help in providing a deeper understanding of this conflict.

Conclude your essay with no more than two pages in which you explain which techniques, given your theoretical viewpoint,  might be most helpful in resolving/managing

this conflict, indicating why this/these technique(s) would be more potentially effective than other measures.

2.    Please write a comprehensive essay explaining how various solutions to ethnic conflict we have covered might be applied to a current significant violent ethnic

conflict and one other case we have discussed in the course (such as Sri Lanka, Northern Ireland, etc.) that has had an ongoing conflict or serious ethnic tensions

that is not fully resolved. Thus, one of your cases must be from current events.  Be sure to specify the degree to which these techniques could potentially apply and

why, making links to theories as appropriate. Also, explain how comparing these two cases can give us insight into the problems of ethnic political violence.
