ESSAY THREE: RESEARCH PAPER due November 27th at 11:55 PM

This paper will take the form of a rewrite of your argumentation paper–with a twist. The ‘rewritten paper’ is a new trend in first year composition and will soon be a requirement at institutions like UBC. Even if it doesn’t sound exciting, the reworking of ideas is considered essential to the development of proper thinking and writing skills.

Consequently, this time around I am asking you to argue the opposite side of the topic : EUTHANASIA SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL IN CANADA. If you were pro-legalization of EUTHANASIA in your argumentation paper, for example, you will now be against it.

The good news is, you’re already sympathetic to and well-informed about the ‘enemy’ coming out of the gate this time around. In fact, the enemy is you! I’ll be checking to make sure you really do switch sides.

Some students will be upset by this. I often get emails wherein students say something to the effect of ‘but I can’t switch sides. This topic is important to me and I feel very strongly about it’. To these people, I reply that the aim of this course is to promote and foster rational thought. By taking on the other side’s stance here, if nothing else you will learn how to disagree with them more effectively in the future. As the saying goes, ‘know your enemy’.

That said, a surprising number of students find, by the end of the term, that they actually change their minds on their chosen topic. After the final, I’ll be asking you to complete a survey about this aspect of the assignment.

Please note that next week you will be asked to compose and submit an outline of your proposed essay on Moodle–for marks. Don’t begin to work on your paper this week. Just do your text reading and start thinking and researching about your topic. The paper isn’t due for a month, so there’s no rush.

Essay criteria:

• 1000-1200 words.
• use at least 4 academic Internet sources must be from academically-credible sites (academic search engines, online journals, etc). You will lose marks for using .com-type sources. Once you have included four proper academic sources, you are also free to bring in other credible sources. Please boldface your academic sources in your Works Cited/Bibliography.
• Include at least two direct quotes, properly cited, and be sure to cite all your sources throughout.
• In terms of format, please use MLA, the sample paper on pp. 362-80 as your guide.
• You must include at least two direct quotations and cite ALL indirect ones. Please review the text on this matter as many of you are not properly introducing or analyzing your quotations yet, as I’ve likely noted in my comments on your second essay.
• You must use either MLA citation formats, but no others.
• Play close attention to plagiarism policies and cite all sources.

Your essay will be graded as follows:

• 5% Proper citation/quote format
• 5% 3 academic sources
• 40% Writing/grammar
• 30% Strength of argument–directly tied to ENGAGEMENT. If there’s little or no sense of awareness of the other side’s views, you will do poorly here.
• 10% Concession and refutation
• 10% Addresses ‘Areas for Improvement’ from Essay 2. If you had no ‘Areas for Improvement’, I will evaluate you on how well you challenge yourself.
