Experimental Media Curatorial Exercise

Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

Curate a virtual exhibition of four items of experimental media, together with a linking narrative explaining how these works illuminate the history of or themes in experimental media. Indicative word-length: 1500 words.

Criteria: You should pick four works which together demonstrate a thesis concerning some aspect of experimental media, such as structure, the relation of sound and image, medium specificity or investigations of perception. Your four selected works may demonstrate a common property, or each may show a different aspect of the theme, or may be chosen to disprove the existence of a property (such as medium specificity). The most obvious sources of material would be video platforms like Vimeo and Ubuweb, artists’ websites, gallery sites.DO NOT use materials that are difficult to access. You may wish to look at specific traditions – national, cultural, technical or formal.

The best work will use the work of curating to reveal facets of the individual works that were not otherwise obvious, while providing a persuasive central idea that connects the four works.
