Family Relations Research Paper (70 points)
•    To receive full points for this assignment, your writing must be clear, concise and supported either by an example from the article itself or your textbook. In one section your textbook is required to be used.
•    Through this assignment, you will become an “expert” in the field of Family Relations. As a student, you will review, discuss, and analyze a topic within the family.
•    View one of the following films, accessible through the Films on Demand resource offered on the ASU Libraries page (http://lib.asu.edu).
Watch one of the following films
1.    Going Home: Teens Reentering Society” (watch both Parts 1 & 2; 45 mins total)

Part 2 – On the Outside: Social Challenges for Teens Reentering Society
2.    The Aging Game” (watch five segments that review issues related to aging, family, and society in Nigeria, Calcutta, Tunisia, and Japan; approx. 70 mins total)
3.    The Sociology of Families and Households (40 mins)
4.    Addiction: The Family in Crisis (19 mins)
5.    Counseling and Psychology: Fixing the Family (49 mins)
6.    Birthrate: New Options for Parenthood (31 mins)
7.    The Child Welfare System: In the Child’s Best Interest (57 mins)

After viewing one of the films, write a critical analysis of what you have seen, tying in concepts from the course text.
•    Begin with a brief synopsis of the film, in one concise paragraph.  This is not a review of the movie, but a synthesis of the events, happenings, and concepts shared in the film. (10 points)
•    Specifically, how do the ideas in the film relate to course concepts? List at least 5 examples of how the concepts from the course and text are illustrated directly or indirectly in the film. (20 points)
•    What family issues are relevant to the topic(s) of the film? (5 points)
•    What social and economic issues are relevant? (5 points)
•    What controversies are present? (5 points)
•    Is there contemporary relevance to the film? How might (or might not) the ideas fit the current time and place (in the US)? (5 points)
•    What are some strengths and weaknesses of the documentary’s portrayal of the topic(s)? (5 points)
•    Flawless spelling/grammar (5 points) and APA in-text citations and references (10 points) are expected.  Keep in mind that this is a literacy course, so grammar and spelling are critical components that must be considered in grading your work.

Assignment requirements
•    All Research Papers are to be completed entirely in APA style. If you have questions about APA style, refer to the APA Manual of Style or Google the ‘OWL Guide’ website.
•    This assignment should be at least 4 pages in length, with 1 reference page (5 pages total). References will include the film watched, one contemporary source, and the course text. Note that the course textbook is a mandatory resource—it must be used and refered in your paper. Any submissions that do not utilize the course text as a resource will not be graded.
•    Please consider having your paper edited by an outside reviewer before submitting it. Utilize campus writing labs or ecollege resources if necessary.
