What or who do you feel encourages us to be socially active in our environment the most (aka capable of acknowledging and making choices)?

What or who do you feel encourages us to be socially active in our environment the most (aka capable of acknowledging and making choices)? Is it our upbringing or role models that encourage us to perhaps challenge our biological destiny, or seek to better ourselves and the circumstances that revolve around us? Is it modeling others behaviors, or more of the verbal communication with others that shapes our world?
