INSTRUCTIONS

The primary objective of this course is to enable you to find solutions to tax problems and effectively communicate your findings.

Prepare a memo for the client’s file as the basis for a letter to the client regarding her tax problem. (You will not actually write the letter.) Assume that you are on the staff of a public accounting firm, and your supervisor has asked you to research the problem. In most firms, the end product is a memo to be placed in the client’s file. The nature and format of the memo are described on the next page.

If you were to be reviewed on a file memo submitted to your firm, your supervisor would consider three factors:

(1) Identification of the relevant authority (finding the key Code sections, regulations, rulings, cases, etc., using the correct citation formats);

(2) Analysis of the authority and how it applies to the fact situation; and

(3) Communication of your findings.
