Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

This is a take-home essay exam. Please answer all questions thoroughly. Cite sources using APA style. Please double-space answers using 12 pt font. You may consult your, textbook, outside research sources including books, journals, periodicals, etc. You must cite any outside sources you use with APA Citation Style. You may NOT work with another student in class. This is an individual assessment of your mastery of course concepts; not a group project. Do not share your opinions, research or other answers with your classmates. Any shared work will result in a grade of 0 for all students involved. No late exams will be accepted for credit.

Please number your answers to questions. Do not turn in one long essay. Consider each question a separate piece that should be answered on its own, apart from the other questions.

1. Four major theoretical perspectives were discussed in class and in your textbook. Identify all four and explain them. Which of the four perspectives best fits your research agenda/research interests? Why? (20 pts)

3. The following are Hypotheses or Research Questions. Tell me which theory you would use to investigate each. Support your choice and explain why it is the best theoretical foundation for the subject matter. Do not use the same theory for more than one of the RQs/Hs. (10 pts each)

4. Reception studies look at how an audience receives mediated messages. Hall argues that all media messages are polysemic. What does this mean? What are dominant, negotiated and oppositional readings? Explain, then give an example of a piece of media content (any type; any content) and tell me what the dominant, negotiated and oppositional reading might be. (10 pts)
