Assignment Requirements

For this project, you will analyze a controversial issue of your choice. This assignment is not a research paper on the issue, but is instead an evaluation of the media coverage of the issue.

The Portfolio Project is designed to do two things:
1.Assess your understanding of how to analyze information based on the principles of strong critical thinking.
2.Evaluate your ability to write an argumentative essay that is logical, valid, and credible.

Again, our goal here is an analysis of how the information is presented and not a review of the issue itself.

Directions:
1.Select one controversial issue. The issue may be national, international, or regional in nature, but to be controversial means that there must be clear differences in values and opinions expressed about the issue. That is, there must be “rival causes” for and against the issue.
2.Locate four different news articles about your issue from four different sources (for example, you cannot use more than one articles from The New York Times). Compare and contrast the four news articles to determine the facts presented about the issue. Take note of any biases you detect.
3.Keep in mind the following nine key factors when evaluating your news articles and controversial issue:
•Purpose or Topic: What is the problem or issue and what are the reasons for it? Is the problem clearly stated and implied?
•Question: Is the question clear and unbiased? Are the purpose and question relevant to one another in the solution that is presented?
•Information: Is there relevant and accurate evidence and information cited for the problem? Does the solution consider the complexity of issues?
•Concepts: Are the concepts clearly defined and understood to be objective?
•Assumptions: Are questionable assumptions clarified? Are these assumptions biased?
•Inferences: Is there an explanation of the reasoning skills used to determine how the solution is reached?
•Point of View: Are multiple points of view considered and analyzed in reaching the solution?
•Implications: Is there an understanding and consideration of the consequences of the solution?
•Presentation: Were infographics or numbers employed to demonstrate concepts and were these helpful?
In addition to the four news articles, locate two scholarly articles from the CSU-Global Library that address the subject matter of your chosen issue.
