Paper, Order, or Assignment Requirements

4 pages for each organization. Give two similar organizations for each of how they are similar. The first is Crown Heights Youth Collective and the second is the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation. Then create a power point presentation for it. I have to present the powerpoint in class. I am on a team of three we have five minutes each to present so make it concise for the powerpoint so I can relate the gist of to the class. Here the questions my team and I ask but I am responsible for the political ties and how other organizations get their funds and donations from. here are the questions that we asked. make two separate powerpoints for the two organizations but you can put it on the same paper. thanks so much

Jeffrey Deskovic foundation for Justice

Hello,

Thank you for you for doing a follow up with me; I never got the previous email.

1. What are the immediate goals of the organization?
To raise $198,000, which would buy the organization another 6 months to then raise another $198,000 which would then get us through the year. During that time, the Foundation would be looking to: A) build the board of directors with people who have either large giving capacity or access to a network of same B) build a donor base/pursue various initiatives designed to build both a large donor base as well as a small donor base.
2. What financial management strategies have previously been successful?
We parted ways with the Assistant Director, thereby removing that salary cap. There were many reasons for the parting of ways, with one of the most important being an unshared vision: he simply wanted the organization to pay a program staff to achieve exonerations, on the theory that this would lead to money coming to us, whereas the director and the rest of the team felt that spending money on development was critical, even if this lead to the overall shortening of the life of the organization in the event that efforts to raise money was not successful.
It was also determined that the organization ran more efficiently without the former assistant director, as he micromanaged everything, which hindered the team in many ways; plus in terms of substantive work product besides overseeing things, there was not much that he added. Responsibilities for running the legal department (attorney, investigator, and paralegal) were shifted to the attorney, who has previous experience running a law office.
The office manager was trained to become a paralegal, which she now spends most of her time doing, while retaining office managerial responsibilities. There was not enough things to do as an office manager to justify a full time job.
3. What financial management strategies have not been successful?
Previous efforts that have proven to not be successful: A) hiring a fundraising firm B) running radio ads based on the advice of tax attorneys, who represented that their wealthy clients, whose taxes and other tax related legal needs, regularly sought and followed their advice as to where to put their financial dollars. On their advice, ads were ran on the radio. C) a consultant was retained for four months based upon their connections, as the foundation sought to get governmental grants for our exonerative and reintegrative work. Meetings were obtained, but no funds were raised D) a PR firm had been retained for a year, with the theory that major media hits would be able to be monetized; that the hits would translate into donors coming forward and also that we could reference the media appearances with donors, and these would be influential in the donor’s decision to donate. Efforts were made to establish Jeff as an expert, with the idea that media opportunities would not have to center around his case, story, or the foundation, but instead that external events could trigger appearances, with Jeff as an expert. Many media hits happened, but these never brought forth donors nor influenced potential donors; and while some expert media appearances happened, it was not wide spread nor frequent.
E) Speaking engagements as a minor revenue stream. When Jeff does speaking engagements, the honorarium is made out to the Foundation. But paid speaking engagements have been few and far between, and for not enough money. (engagements that have been participated in free are limited to the school where Jeff graduated from, and CLE events in front of judges, whose organizations by regulation do not pay.) Various speakers bureaus have been approached, by they all say that unless Jeff has a book published, they wouldn’t take him. But publishing a book is process that is at least 6 months away ( a dispute has to be resolved with a co-author, which is currently scheduled for arbitration in April, and then after that a literary agent has to be found, as does a publisher, and then the book needs to be improved)
4. How is money currently being solicited?
We are looking for large donors; we are trying to recruit board members. The Foundation recently ran an Indegogo Campaign, but while everything (video, music, pr to go with it) cost $15k, for a company with a long successful track record, only $5000 was raised.
-There is one potential donor whose brother is wealthy, with whom 3 meetings in one week have already occurred, who said he will try to get his brother to host an event at his house
– There is an upcoming meeting with the financial entity that is Jeff’s financial advisor. There was a previous promise when Jeff switched to a family office (a financial institution that only managers the wealth of clients who are worth $50 million- [an exception was made to deal with Jeff] that they would try to help raise funds, in that their other clients regularly ask for their input in re wear to put their philanthropic dollars
– Access points are being looked for in order to try to raise money from the right/conservatives, who now have an interest in criminal justice reform
– An investigation is underway to determine whether the Ford Foundation can be solicited
– Research is underway to determine if there is a way that entities that are being funded for other criminal justice work, such as mass incarceration/prison reduction, prison reform, police brutality/unjustifiable deadly force, special housing unit, to determine if Jeff could assist in these endeavors and earn money for same, with the money received by Jeff to then be donated to
5. How can money be saved?
If the Foundation was able to obtain free space, that expense could be saved. If the Foundation could find funding for it’s apartment, or obtain donated apartments, that expense could be saved.
6. How to increase donations?
The Foundation needs people who can introduce Jeff to potential donors who have large giving capacity. The Foundation needs to build a board of directors who have large giving capacity and/or access to a network of same, for the purpose of helping the Foundation raise money. The Foundation needs more major media hits to get it in front of more eyes.
7. Does your organization have an innovations department?
not a formal department. But the entire staff thinks outside of the box and regularly has brain storm sessions, looking for unconventional ways to raise funds, as well as increase the profile of the Foundation, which usually means increasing the profile of Jeff, in that when he makes media appearances, the Foundation is mentioned.
8. What is your short term financial goal?
initially to raise $198,000 and then another $198,000. Ideally, though, if the Foundation was able to raise $1.2 million dollars, it could add necessary components needed for it to carry out it’s mission more efficiently. These parts would be: 2 paralegals; 2 investigators; a social worker; an attorney; a pr person; a policy person.
9. How can the organization financial management be improved or reconstructed?
I don’t know.

Crown Heights Youth Collective

Our immediate goals are to move towards self-sufficiency with a lesser dependency on public funding.

Our most fiscal management technique is to have a n independent fiscal agent handling the daily matters.

In house lacked the on-going up dates and changes by the federal, state and local requirements (i.e. audits; taxes filings)

Timely filings and energy conservation;

Utilize the electronic based donors;

We are all in the innovations mode bringing in new ideas and sharing with one another;

Maintain solvency and move to independence;

We are satisfied with the fiscal management system
