Finite Element Analysis

Finite Element Analysis

Question 2.2

A loaded structural component, shown in Fig Q2.2, is manufactured from Titanium alloy having a Young’s modulus, E = 114000 MPa and a Poisson’s ratio, n = 0.3. The component is 1.5 mm thick and subjected to a load of 150 N.

Complete a Finite Element Analysis of the given problem using the ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL) and present the following. Wherever possible you should use data in the form of figures from your finite element analysis to strengthen the report (no word limit).

  1. Conduct a validation study for the given problem to analyse whether a chosen procedure, element type, boundary condition and mesh size will give you expected results. You should show the following as evidence:
  • Meshed model and boundary conditions used.
  • Rationale behind using a specific model for validation for the given problem.
  • Comparison and discussion of results between hand calculation and FEA.

  1. Following the validation, conduct a full convergence study using any convergence criteria, taking into consideration at-least 5 different mesh sizes.

  1. Using the converged mesh size discuss the state of stress experienced by the component.

A finite element meshed model of the problem showing boundary conditions, element size and element type used.
