Contextual Analysis (Essay 3): The Hero’s Journey

Purpose: For this essay you will build upon the analysis techniques already covered by the first two assignments by taking a secondary text and using it as a focusing lens on a close reading of one or two story lines in the film Babel. The goal is to analyze how context works to alter/affect/help/disrupt an interpretation. The focal point of the essay is your primary text, Babel. The secondary text is to help focus and assist your analysis; consider the second text a “theory” that you are applying to your primary text(s) in order to “read” it in a specific way.

Audience: An educated, college audience of peers.

Prompts: Answer one of the prompts below. (I’ll consider other ideas you have, but talk to me first.)
A: Analyze one character from Babel.  Evaluate to what extent the character does or does not fit the idea of the hero and the monomyth.
•    This is an evaluation and discussion of heroic status, not a summary of the text(s).
B: Compare two seemingly different characters from Babel that take the same heroic journey. Evaluate and analyze why and how their paths are the same.
•    This is an analytical comparison of heroic journeys, not a summary of the texts.
C: Compare two characters in Babel that seem at first if they are on the same heroic journey, but in some way diverge.  Evaluate and analyze why and how their paths diverge.
•    This is an analytical comparison of heroic journeys, not a summary of the texts.

•    You may choose examples that do depict the hero on the journey, examples that do not depict the hero on the journey, or a combination of the two.
•    You must explicitly reference Joseph Campbell’s ideas from The Hero With a Thousand Faces.
•    You must provide specific illustrations – supported with detailed explanations – to bolster your claim.

Primary text: You may choose to analyze one or two of the major characters in Babel:

Richard
Susan
Amelia
Yussef
Ahmed
Abdullah
Chieko
Yasujiro

Secondary text: The lens for this essay is the hero’s journey. Joseph Campbell’s The Hero With a Thousand Faces – as discussed in the documentary The Power of Myth, and summarized in course documents and lectures, and as presented in the Student’s Guide – is the secondary text through which you will view your primary text(s). You must specifically reference The Hero With a Thousand Faces – either from The Power of Myth, class notes, course documents, or the Student’s Guide – in your essay. The main focus of your paper is the primary text(s) through the lens of the secondary text.  To “use” a text means that you quote the source or paraphrase numerous times.
