This friend goes on to get a D in BIO 181 when he takes it a second time. Would he have to take the class over again?

This friend goes on to get a D in BIO 181 when he takes it a second time. Would he have to take the class over again?
If so, what would he need to do in order to do this? If not, can he get this grade, too, removed from his GPA calculation?
