General Guideline for writing the assignment:
1)  You must undertake the coursework individually.
2)  The assignment should not exceed 1000 words.
3)  The written coursework must include the following sections:
a)  Assignment topic: including the problem topic and the
writer.
b) Introduction:investigation of the decision problem through
a literature review.
c)  Problem description: with details considering objective
and criteria.
d)  Justification: for using decision support tools. Provide
possible assumptions for modelling the problem.
e)  Problem Solution: using an appropriate technique or
available computer software.
f)  Discussion and analysis of results: preferably using
computer software.
g)  Conclusion
h)  References
4)  You must cite all the references e.g. books, articles and website
sources using Harvard Referencing System. You are expected to
cite at least 5 references within the text with proper referencing
for each assignment. You must show clearly where you have
used someone else’s work in your assignments e.g. when you
quote or paraphrase someone else’s work.?
Problem Description:
A manufacturer is planning to produce two new products 1 and 2. The
setup cost for the production facilities and the unit profit for each product are given below:

The company has two factories 1 and 2, which are capable of producing these products. Factories 1 and 2 have 480 and 720 hours of production time available for the

production of the products respectively.
In order to avoid doubling the setup cost only one factory could be
used for manufacturing each product. The production rate of each
product is given below (in units/hour):

The manufacturer wants to know how to manufacture the new products.
a) Indicate the decision problem and investigate similar problems in a wider related range through a literature review with citing at least 5 references. ?
b) Describe the problem with identification of the objective and
the criteria required for the plant manager’s decision. ?
c) Justify the type of programming required for the problem formulation. ?
d) Formulate the problem. ?
e) Solve the problem using any appropriate tool e.g. Simplex
Method, or DecsionPro/Excel ?

f) Discuss how the above mathematical model along with the solution can be used by the ?
plant manager in production planning. ?
The answers to the sub-questions must be properly located within
sections outlined in the General Guidelines-Section
Assessment Criteria:
The standard Bradford University School of Management marking criteria will be used in grading your work. The criteria to mark your assignment will be mainly based on

how you will answer the following
questions in different sections of the problem description (sections ‘a’
to ‘f’):
?  Is the problem investigation properly undertaken through a literature review? ?
?  Is the selected decision model appropriate for the modelling
problem? ?
?  Are the possible assumptions found and set for using the decision model? ?

1) Use a few relevant references in the assignment and provide
a list of these at the end of the assignment, in Harvard referencing style. ?

2) The wordage is 1000 words for the assignment. A penalty will
apply if you go over the word limit so please consult the latest
edition of the Student Handbook. The references, appendices,
figures and tables are not counted towards the word limit. ?

3) The answers to the sub-questions must be properly located
within the General Guidelines outlined on page 2. ?
4) Use the following layout guidelines for the whole assignment:
