Directions for paper
1.The study of history and other cultures is not just the recording of facts, but also the interpretation of evidence. To do so, you must rely on your own powers of argumentation and analysis. Your thesis statement should be underlined so it can be clearly identified and should contain an explicit statement of the position you hold or the argument you are making.
2.This is not a research paper. You are meant to successfully complete the assignment only by using your brain and the texts we have been reading in class. Do not attempt to use the Internet or other source materials while writing your paper.
3. Even though this is not a research paper, you must cite the original evidence for all-important points in your paper. Failure to do so is plagiarism and will result in a minimum penalty of a 0% on the assignment. Ancient sources should be cited by author, book #, and chapter/section number: for example, Herodotos IX.23.1, Euripides, Bacchae 241-3, or Plato, Republic, 53a-d. Citations should be given with in text parenthetical citations.
4. Do not tell a story. Assume that your reader(i.e.me) is familiar with the plot of the works that you are discussing and / or with the historical sequence of event. Plot summary has no place in this paper. Your job is one of interpretation, not narration.
5. Do not reproduce your lecture notes. Show that you have done the reading and given it careful thought. Lecture notes for class are NOT an acceptable source for your papers.
6.You must provide citations for all points when you refer to something in the text, whether you are simply summarizing or quoting directly. If you choose to provide a quote from the reading to strengthen your argument, you should keep your quotation short 3-4 lines at most. Do not just string a bunch of quotations together with a few original sentences. You must achieve a balance between your own analysis and the supporting evidence for the ancient sources. You must be sure to call attention to specific words, phrases, or ideas in the quotations which are relevant to you argument. Only quotations longer than four lines should be indented and single  spaced; all others should be incorporated into the body of the paragraph and encased in quotation mark.
7. Grammar and spelling will affect your grade. In particular, be especially vigilant about these common pitfalls: the difference between possessives and plurals; the proper use of commas and semi-colons; sentence fragments; run-on sentences; subject-verb agreement; misspellings (especially of character names); the proper use of quotation marks. Evaluation of your paper will be based on grammar and style as well as content. Use full sentences and appropriate academic language do not use slang. Bad grammar can render even excellent analysis unintelligible, and I cant grade what I cant understand.
8. Proofread your paper! I recommend reading it out loud to someone (or your hamster, if necessary) to catch mistakes. Trade papers with a friend. Is your English clear and correct? This should be your best academic English= if your are worried, get help.
9. Avoid meaningless platitudes. Don’t use expressions like “ a lot” or “often” without explaining what precisely that means, or tell me something is important or significant without telling me why something is important or significant.
11. Your paper must conform to the following specifications. Paper not meeting these specifications will be penalized. Note that you will have to change some of the basic settings Microsoft Word to conform to these parameters:
a. Font: Times NewRoman12
b. Margins: 1 inch on all sides.
c. Spacing: double spaced text. Indent the first line of each paragraph one standard tab space. Do not insert extra blank lines between paragraphs. Do not justify your text.
d. Length: your paper should be around 1,000 words; in other words, no less than 3 full pages and no more than 4.

13. When your first paper is handed back, do not misplace it. You will need to hand it in again( the copy with my marks and grade on it) when you hand in your second paper. If the first paper is not turned in again with the second paper, this will result in a penalty on the grade of the second paper.
