Paper #1 Content Analysis – Gender and Representation
For this first paper you will conduct your own independent content analysis and write up the results. In order to successfully complete this assignment you must use
the data you collect to make an argument about gender representation in the media.
1. Choose a limited number of current media texts (for example, three fashion magazines; three evening television dramas; the top selling songs on iTunes; Super
Bowl commercials; etc.)
2. Choose a specific element to count. Do not just count men and women. Count men and women and something more useful to analyze (ie how many women wear high
heels or make-up; how many men are shown caring for other people as compared to women; etc.) Write a 3-4 pages (900-1,200 words) paper analyzing the data you
collected. This paper should include the following:
o An explanation of why you chose this media and why you are counting what you are counting representations of gender.
o A section explaining your method of analysis, how you collected your data, and justifying your use of your rubric.
o A summary of the data you collected
o An analysis of your findings
3. Your paper should incorporate citations from at least two of the articles you read from class.
– Shome, Raka,”‘Global Motherhood’:The Transnational Intimacies of White Femininity,” Gender, Race, and Class in Media: A Critical Reader, 4th Edition, Eds. Gail Dines
and Jean Humez.
Use Chicago-style citation. See the citation guides on the library website for sample entries.
Note: I chose these three magazines: Vogue, Bazzar, Marie Claire.
What I think is to focus on the sexuality on photos in magazines especially those photo in the cover page.
