THE AAB PBS JOINT VENTURE IN OPERATION
Case Overview – This individual assignment is intended to give you an opportunity to apply some key concepts from this course to a real world context. Specifically, you are required to read the case ‘The ABB PBS Joint Venture in Operation’ (located in Short Loans Online) and discuss the problems and opportunities experienced by AAB PBS from the perspective of the management of its value chain. You must conclude your analysis with a discussion of the actions you perceive AAB PBS management should undertake in order to secure the long term success of the company.
Learning Objectives – This assessment item requires you to apply a conceptual framework (the value chain) to the analysis of the management of a MNE. It therefore, fulfils broad learning objectives related to this course. However, the primary learning objective of this assessment item is to display critical thinking about underlying theories, concepts, assumptions and arguments relating to the multinational form of organisation. Therefore, in the context of this assignment, you should draw on international business theories, models and frameworks to support your discussion of the problems and opportunities experienced by AAB PBS in relation to the management of its value chain.
Advice – After reading the case a couple of times to familiarize yourself with the company and the case, it is suggested that you read through again and make notes on what aspects of the value chain are working and what aspects are not working. It is recommended that you create a simple table with each component of the value chain in the left side column and then write a summary about each component in the right side column. This will then provide you with a summary of the performance of the value chain, from which you can then start to think critically about critically what needs to be changed and what does not. This type of approach is important because it will allow you to more clearly focus in on the key issues in your paper, rather than getting bogged down in the detail.
Formatting, submission and word count – Size 12 point font (Arial or Times New Roman) and 1.5 line spacing. You are required to submit this assessment electronically through Turnitin. No hardcopies are required. The word count of your case study analysis is 1500 words +/- 10%, excluding executive summary, table of content, appendices, tables, and references. If you go above the maximum word count you will be penalised. The structure of the assessment item is that of a business style report, but without an Executive Summary. Therefore, your introduction should clearly be an introduction to the content of your report and not an introduction to your chosen MNE.
