The analysis must answer the following questions ( minimum of one paragraph is needed to fully address each question) be sure to include examples and details from the movie to support your responses.
1. Discuss the time and setting of the movie ( when do the events occur?) name and give a brief description of four major character in the movie. Colonel Robert Gould Shaw must be one the four. which character depiction was more of a depiction of people during the period of the movie? Why?
2. How would you describe the relationship between free black and former or runaway slaves who were members of the 54th Massachusetts regiment? Was this typical of the relationship between civilian free black and former slavers? Explain. what do you think Africans could have done to mitigate the tensions between them? Do you see any similarities between behavior then and black people of today? Explain
3. Although many blacks served in the army in an effort to help free slaves, what were some of the other reasons blacks wanted to fight? Do you think this was typical behavior for blacks at this time? What about today? Do black people exhibit the same social concern for minorities?
4. What was some of the problems/difficulties black troops had to overcome as they prepared to fight ? Why do these difficulties occur? How do you know that whit soldiers didn’t have the same problems? What role (if any) did racism play in the formation and training and preparation of the 54th Massachusetts Regiment? Cite from the movie from the movie. How did the 54th overcome these difficulties?
5. Do you think that the treatment of African Americans in the military is any different today from that during the civil war? Explain. Were there similar problems for blacks during the American revolution and the war of 1812? If racism is still an issue, what factors account for the presence of racism?
6. How does the movie “Glory “ portray the struggles of African? When it come to racist attitudes and behavior of whit America, how do you rate ( on a scale 0f 1-10) this movie? Explain your position. what examples support the idea that white America was sympathetic to the plight of the black soldiers?
7. From your perspective, why was this movie chose as a special assignment for class? Do you think that the movie accurately depicts the difficulties faced by African American troop during the civil war?
8. America has elected a black president, but yet , racism is still a problem. What evidence can you cite that supports or dispels this conclusion? Do you think American will ever be a ‘ color-blind” nation? Explain.
