Group Decision Making

Quite often a group of people makes a better decision than an individual simply because a group brings a broader range of perspectives to the decision making process, and they tend to be more committed to the outcome because they have participated in the process. However, group decision making also has a number of disadvantages including peer pressure, the influence of dominant individuals within the group and the increased time it can take to reach a decision.

Carefully consider the advantages and disadvantages of group decision making and some of the limitations of groups (pp.158-160 in your textbook).

  • Have you ever been influenced by peer pressure?
  • Have gone along with a group decision that you really didn’t want to?
  • What factors caused you to go along with the group against your own judgement?
