Brief Procedure
Select any of the cases listed in the textbook, any of your own. Extract the important information, and write a brief including the following sections (don’t forget the section titles):

Title.
Short title format (plaintiff v. defendant, year)
2.
Facts. Brief summary of the “facts” of the case. About a paragraph. Use your own words.
3.
Issue. The legal issue before the Court. What is the question in civil or criminal law? Pose the question so the answer is “yes” or “no.” 1 sentence.
4.
Holdings. A statement of the Court’s ruling. 1 sentence.
5.
Opinion. Summary of why the Court voted the way it did. You can also
include separate opinons and notes (if any). About a paragraph.
6.
Comments. This is the most important part of the brief, and should be 1-2 paragraphs long. A statement of the case’s importance for an understanding of law and society. What does the case tell us about the sources and purposes of law; the social, political, and ideological factors that impact how laws are established; or the role of the law in furthering the goal of disenfranchised groups?
