Haidt says that to understand ourselves fully we must study humans on three levels – physical, psychological, and sociocultural. He claims that “People gain a sense of meaning when their lives cohere across the three levels of their existence” (p227). How would you be able to tell if someone’s life cohered in this fashion? What would you look for in their behaviour; what questions would you ask them in order to find out? Provide an example of someone, perhaps yourself, for whom the three levels do not cohere? Where is the incoherence and how does it affect the person’s meaning system and behaviour?
