Hazanavicius's The Artist

Hazanavicius’s The Artist

Discuss the ways in which Hazanavicius’s The Artist (2011) draws upon two silent films we have studied in this semester in terms of the representation of moviemaking -OR- of the visual depiction of sound. Be sure to give very precise examples in key scenes and to identify the aesthetic elements shared by the early 20th century films and this 21st century silent film. (Connotative and denotative visuals). If you choose to do the visual depiction of sound, I want to stress that score is not relevant to a visual depiction of sound. It may be easier to choose your examples by muting the soundtrack to better examine the visual narrative.Essays will be graded on knowledge of content, essay structure (intro and conclusion please), argument and evidence, and college standards of written English. Proofread for mechanics, style, grammar, spelling, and writing errors. This portion of the exam counts twice as much as the in-class, so please be meticulous!

Here is the list of the silent films to choose from: Please pick 2:
Porter, The Great Train Robbery (1903)

: Musketeers of Pig Alley (1913),
Intolerance (1916);
