This link takes you to Atomic Cafe, a documentary look at the atomic proliferation of the 1940s and 1950s. It includes footage and interviews about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Watch at least the first 15 minutes (the rest is quite good and you are encouraged to watch more) and then respond to the following questions:

1.    Based on what you saw, what would it have been like to be an ordinary civilian in Japan as the bombs were dropped?

2.    Should historians consider the dropping of these bombs in terms of war brutalities against civilians? Why or why not?

Then respond to two of your classmates. Refer to the Course Schedule for the specific due dates for your original and response posts.
Unit Overview
In 1918, people all over the world referred to the global war that had just ended as “the Great War” because no other war had come close to matching its size or scope. However, just two decades later another war had broken out, and this one proved to be even larger and more destructive than the first.
Unit 12 takes as its focus this Second World War. Chapter 32 begins by exploring the events that led to World War II, especially in terms of Japanese aggression in China, and Italian and German aggression in Africa and Europe. As you read, think about the reasons why the victorious powers of WWI did not try to do more to stop these aggressive actions. Was there anything the United States, Britain, or France could have done to stop Japan, Germany, or Italy?
Chapter 32 then moves on to explain both the events of the war in Asia and Europe, as well as the characteristics of life during wartime. World War II stands out for the scale of brutality and violence used not only against military combatants, but against civilians as well. How can you account for such brutality? What was it about this war that allowed such actions to occur, and by so many participants?
Finally, this chapter concludes with a look at the beginning of the Cold War; a period of increasing tension between the United States and the Soviet Union. Why did these two recent allies grow wary of one another as the war came to an end? Could something have been done to prevent such tensions from developing?
