Paper Topic : In June 1934, a woman from Eureka, California wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of President Franklin Roosevelt, asking if she could “do something so my husband can have a job.” Like many Americans during the Great Depression, the woman from Eureka understood the federal government to be something that could help her and as a force for good in American life. You have to analyze how Americans have understood the role of the federal government in their lives since 1930. You might frame your answer around one or more of these questions: What have Americans expected of their federal government? How have they understood the government’s capacity for effective and moral action? Why have they trusted or mistrusted their government? What has changed in the relationship between Americans and their federal government since the New Deal?

RESTRICTIONS:
Your task here is to analyze a historical process using a mixture of primary and secondary texts. It is not to offer a comprehensive account of everything that happened in the period about which you are writing. You do not need to include documents not germane to your subject. This is not an exercise in cramming as many documents as possible into a paper. This is an exercise in analyzing change over time while marshaling evidence intelligently. Think through what your argument is about the changes that you see as significant, choose documents that allow you to effectively document and analyze these changes, and write and revise the essay into a clear presentation of your ideas.
