1. No sooner had the “hot war” ended than the “cold war” began. Trace this development from about 1945 through the end of the Eisenhower administration in 1961, showing how the United States reacted to and tried to cope with the specter of international communism. In your analysis, what in fact caused the Cold War, and what was the legacy of the Truman and Eisenhower administrations in foreign affairs?
2. Affluence, conformity, and consumerism were major aspects of life in the 1950s, but voices of discontent could still be heard. Look first at the social and economic themes of the late 1940s and1950s. Discuss the rise of the affluent society and how it seemed to pull the nation together. Then turn to the voices of protest and discuss the actions of those who critiqued American society or who were left out of the mainstream. Be sure to give considerable attention to the origins and development of the civil rights movement.
