History of Special Education

The writer will:
(1) Describe special education as an intervention (preventive intervention, remedial intervention and compensatory education) and the defining features of special education (individually planned, specialized, intensive, goal directed, research based methods, and guided by the student performance.
(2) Provide a timeline of the special education law. As the law has changed over time, discuss the impact the law has had on families, students, and educators. This time line may be created using bullet points.
(3) Include a discussion of issues, assurances, due process, rights related to assessment, eligibility and placement within a continum of services.
(4) Indentify the issues in identification of individuals with exceptional learning needs, including those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
