1. Read Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s “Home Life” (1875). You can find it on page 14 of the Voices of Freedom, Volume 2 reader.
What is your reaction to the document? What do you think it teaches us about women’s struggle for equality? How do you think the struggle for women’s rights was connected to the fight for African American rights? (one paragraph)
2. Read “William Graham Sumner on Social Darwinism” (1880); you can find the document on page 32 of the Voices of Freedom, Volume 2 reader.
Read “Walter Rauschenbusch and the Social Gospel” (1912); you can find the document on page 46 of the Voices of Freedom, Volume 2 reader.
Compare and contrast these two documents. What is each man’s view of the poor? How do they differ with each other on the best ways to run society and the economy? Do you agree or disagree with one of them?
3. Read “President McKinley on American Empire” (1899); you can find the document on page 67 of the Voices of Freedom, Volume 2 reader.
Read “Emilio Aguinaldo on American imperialism in the Phillippines” (1899); you can find it on page 69 of the Voices of Freedom, Volume 2 reader.
Describe these two documents and explain your reaction to them. How do each of these men view American imperialism? Do you agree or disagree with one of them more than the other?
4. Read “A World Safe for Democracy” by Woodrow Wilson (pgs. 107-109). Write one paragraph about your reaction to this document.
5. Read “The Fight for Civil Liberties” (pgs. 141-146). What issues does the author consider to be important? Do you think the author was very much in tune with the times (1920s) or was the author ahead of her/his time? What is your reaction to the document as a whole?
