According to your author, gender inequality is still practiced, not only in the U.S. but
throughout the world. One topic that has been debated for several years in the media and by
social science researchers related to gender inequality, is the current practice of “hooking up”
(having casual sexual encounters) by U.S. students, particularly those on college campuses.
This practice is viewed by some as a form of sexual inequality for women, in that the traditional
sexual double-standards are still being used in viewing the participation of women in these acts,
versus the participation of men.

To complete this assignment do the following:

2. Read the attached article: “Hooking Up in College” (Article entitled: “The
Sexual Double Standard and Gender Differences Towards Casual Sex Among
U.S. University Students.” (England, Bearak, 2014, Retrieved Jan. 8, 2010))
3. Access the youtube website. Search for the song: “Summer loving” with the
lyrics from the movie GREASE. Listen to this song and view the lyrics as
they are presented.
4. After reviewing all of this information, answer the following questions:
a. What difference does hooking up have on women’s self- esteem and the self-
esteem of men? (Give specific examples).
b. How does hooking up affect women’s reputations versus the reputations of
men? (Explain your answer in detail).
c. Does this practice accurately depict what “intimacy” should be in
relationships? Why or why not? What is intimacy? (Be very specific).
d. How does the song from “GREASE” demonstrate different gender norms
and a sexual double standard related to sexuality?
