Project #3: Explaining Essay
For this assignment, you will explain your major. You must describe the classes and requirements
necessary to become an active member in your chosen field.
The audience for this paper is other undergraduates who have expressed interest in this field and may have
questions. Use language with which they will be familiar; define terms and concepts they will need to
understand and may find unfamiliar.
• Engage the audience and attract their attention with a captivating introduction; make a claim with a strong
thesis statement.
• You must discuss the classes, or types of classes, necessary to get a degree in this area. Why are they
needed? Include relevant classes or areas of study. If you choose to pursue graduate work, include those
requirements as well.
• You will then discuss what types of employment are available. What types of jobs would one be qualified
to do with this degree? What will these jobs entail? What will a typical day on the job be like?
• Are there other skills or talents that one needs to have in order to be successful in this field? Are there
parts of the job one might want to be aware of? Physical or mental challenges that one should know about?
• And finally, why did you choose this field? Why is it a good fit you?
• Your conclusion will wrap up the paper, restating your thesis.
A total of four sources are required for this paper; you must three different types of sources. You must do at
least one interview for this paper.
Grammar, spelling, and punctuation will all be evaluated and are worth 20 percent of the grade for this
assignment. You must cite all sources using MLA style; you must include a Works Cited page. Your
finished draft should ideally be error free.
