Order Description

This assignment consists of two parts: 1) you must submit an annotated bibliography that contains a list and brief assessment of two or three primary sources and four

to six historical scholarly secondary sources that you will use as the basis of your essay. 2) You must submit a research essay based on the approved primary and

secondary sources.
The essay must be typed using 12-point font, double-spaced with one-inch margins and six to eight pages of text in length, plus title page, footnotes or endnotes, and

a bibliography. It must contain (a) an introduction with a thesis statement and a brief outline of the topics or points that you will discuss in the essay to support

your thesis; (b) the body of your essay that develops your argument and provides examples from your sources; and (c) a conclusion that restates your thesis, expands on

its relevance and where your work fits within the historical field. The bibliography (i.e. not a “Works Cited” page) should consist of three or four primary sources as

well as five to seven scholarly books and/or articles. Please use the past tense consistently when writing about past events and people.
Please use only scholarly materials, including websites or databases for sources, thus no Wikipedia or Encyclopedia websites.
Annotated Bibliography Instruction:
Please include the following information in your annotated bibliography:
1. Identify at the top of the first page, in a sentence or two, the specific subject of the annotated bibliography by relating it to your chosen research topic.
2. Insert each specific bibliographic entry in alphabetical order divided into two sections – Primary Sources and Secondary Sources – (please see the Sample

Bibliography below) about which you must include the information found below.
3.1 In addition to the bibliographic information for each annotated entry, you should provide the following information for each primary source:
a) The first section should include information about type and location of the primary source, such as a government document in an edited book or a painting in an

online document collection, and your assessment of its validity.
b) The second section must include a short summary of the content or message of the source.
c) The third section must show how that source relates to your subject in terms of its connection to your chosen topic, an assessment of its relevance and value of the

source for your research essay.
3.2 In addition to the bibliographic information for each annotated entry, you should provide the following information for each secondary source:
d) The first section should include information about the author’s qualifications (such as noting his/her profession as an historian or as a journalist), as well as

the publisher (if it is a university press or trade publication) in order to help you assess and analyze the information and argument found in the source.
e) The second section must identify the perspective or approach utilized by the author of the secondary source: Is it a theoretical work, a general survey, or

noticeably biased in favor of a specific viewpoint and/or political stance?
f) The third section must include a short summary of the contents and identify the argument, or thesis, of the source with some consideration of the evidence used by

the author to support the thesis or argument.
g) The fourth section must show how that source relates to your subject in terms of its connection to your chosen topic, an assessment of its relevance and value of

the source to your research essay.
