Order Description

Answer all parts of the following questions in paragraph form. Please indicate the question you are answering at the beginning of each paragraph.

55. There are several models (theories) of middle age, among which is the “crisis model” and the “transition model”. Which do you agree with more, based on what you know about these theories and what you have observed?

56. What changes in physical functions are associated with the middle adult years? Do you think men or women are effected most by these changes?

57. How does sexuality change as men and women move through middle age?

58. What is the difference between “Crystallized Intelligence” and “Fluid Intelligence?” What does this imply about cognitive changes in the middle adult and later adult years?

59. Many studies have provided evidence that the course of midlife is extremely diverse and varied – more difficult for some than others. What is your opinion of Erikson’s theory of generativity versus self-absorption, and how have you observed this in other you may know who are middle-aged?

60. Middle age is a time when adult children leave home, leaving their middle aged parents with an “empty nest.” What do the terms “ empty nest” and “boomerang generation” mean, and how have you observed this to be true or false in your own life experiences?

61. What are some of the challenges associated with divorce and remarriage, and what factors help adults in midlife meet these challenges?

62. In midlife, some things change and some things remain pretty much the same as far as personality goes. What has research told us about this, and what are your observations and experiences regarding personality in middle age?

63. As we approach the end of this course, we also approach the end of the lifespan. Does this sound sad to you (end of life, not end of course!)? If it does, perhaps it has something to do with an interesting concept known as “ageism.” What is “ageism” and how does it affect how we feel about older people, and eventually, ourselves?

64. Now that life expectancy has almost doubled since 1900, this last stage of life has become very long, with people spending as much as 1/3 of their life in “older adulthood.” The concept of dividing this stage into 4 decades is relatively new, but very important in understanding the aging process. What are the 4 decades of later life, and how are they different from each other?

65. Physical changes are very apparent in later life, often effected by one’s lifestyle, such as smoking, excessive alcohol use, and exposure to the sun causes wrinkling of the skin, as well as genetic factors – what you inherit from your parents. One of these changes is changes in senses – hearing, vision, taste, smell, and touch. Do you know or have you observed older adults who have experienced a noticeable decline in their senses? Which sensory declines do you think seem to be more troublesome?

66. How do thinking and memory change as a healthy person moves through older adulthood? How do older adults compensate for brain-related declines in their cognitive processes? Have you observed this in people you know?

67. Throughout all the stages we have studies so far, how one views one’s self and others has been something that changes from stage to stage. How are these status passages associated with entering older adulthood different than those that have come before? Give some examples.

68. Retirement is a major change in status for mostly everyone, requiring different adjustments for different people, depending on their individual circumstances. What transitions and what changes – good and bad – are typically experienced when an older adult retires?

69. How is the age structure of the US population changing and what impact will this change have on society and social programs? How do you think this will change or not change for yourself when you are older?

70. Where we live is very important to most of us for many reasons. But what if we need some help when we are older? What are some options available when older adults need assistance in living and how should families choose among them?
