Reminder: Do not use outside sources in a Humanities essay. The argument should be your own and the only material used should be the assigned readings.

Respond to one of the following prompts:

1. Montaigne suggests that “barbarous is only what we are not accustomed to.” How does Shakespeare’s The Tempest reinforce and contradict Montaigne’s views on barbarism?

Note: In constructing Montaigne’s views, you must draw on more than“On the          Cannibals.”

2. What knowledge can we gain            from imagination and fantasy? Construct your argument by comparing two of the following—Montaigne, Descartes,        Pascal, and Shakespeare.
