The HURIER model takes a behavioral approach to listening. Using it can help you to develop more effective listening skills. The model focuses on the six key areas or stages of listening: hearing, understanding, remembering, interpreting, evaluating, and responding. In this exercise, you will apply the HURIER model to a fictitious conversation to better understand how each step works on its own and how they all work together in the listening process.
You have recently discovered that you have a long-lost relative living in another state, part of the U.S. you are not familiar with, or even another country. Your relative has invited you to visit and stay for free. You are excited to go, but soon discover he/she has many different meanings for the same words you use and it is a bit confusing.
For example, your long-lost relative tells you he plays football for Chelsea in England. You discover that football in England and football in the United States are two very different sports.
Step One: Select a location in which you have never lived, but know something about from a friend, movie or other source. An alternative is to select a place you have lived, but that was significantly different from where you live now and compare the place you used to live to where you live now.
Discuss, in your paper, three different words that mean something different in that place you selected than they do where you live (or where you live now) and explain the difference between the words. Identify which location has which meaning.
For example, when we want to take time off work in the United States, we typically say vacation. In England, when they take time off of work, they call it a holiday. We, in the U.S., usually use the word holiday for special days on the calendar year such as Thanksgiving or Christmas; whereas, holiday could be any day of the year in England.

Step Two: In paragraph format in a 2-4 page paper, discuss how you would use the HURIER model to avoid a misunderstanding with your long-lost relative while you are in the foreign location by selecting one of the words you discussed in step one and putting it into a conversation format.
